Judge - The Osgoode Cup - Annual National Mooting Competition

I was invited to judge The Osgoode Cup at my alma mater, Osgoode Hall Law School. The competition was held on March 2, 2019. The case to be mooted was an appeal from the Ontario Court of Appeal decision, R. v. Le, 2018 ONCA 56.

Ultimately, in this case, the Supreme Court of Canada highlighted an important victory in upholding limits on lawful police conduct and emphasizing the ways race changes perceptions of interactions with the police.

The moot involved arbitrary detention and exclusion of evidence under the Canadian Charter and concerned issues such as s. 8, s.9 and s.24(2) and touched on a string of prior decisions: Robson v Hallet; R v Evans; R v Tonner; R v Edwards; and R v Grant. The Osgoode Cup promotes access to justice and advocacy. Mooting is best described as a combination of public speaking, debate, and thesis defense. At the law school level, mooting is both an intercollegiate and varsity competition between law schools.
